According to old Serbian tradition, members of the Serbian community gather after Sunday Mass at Easter to hold an egg-bumping competition.

At the Bánát Association in Deszk, both young and old prepare for this day with great excitement weeks in advance, as the Association has been organising the Egg Bumping European Championship for years, which fell on 20 April this year.

The essence of the competition is that contestants, arranged in pairs, tap their painted, hard-boiled eggs together, and the one whose egg remains intact advances to the next round. Therefore, every preparation is of immense importance: careful attention must be paid to what the chickens eat in the weeks leading up to the competition, and the egg-boiling technique can also prove decisive. The winners continue to compete, forming new pairs in each round, until finally only one contestant with an intact egg remains. They are crowned the Egg Bumping Champion, becoming the proud owner of the champion's trophy, celebrated by the entire community.

The Egg Bumping event would not be complete without a visually stunning egg beauty contest as well.

The programme was complemented by a handcrafts workshop, in which both children and adults participated with great enthusiasm. Wooden eggs were painted red and, once dry, decorated with traditional folk motifs. Nests wound from raffia were also crafted to hold the decorated eggs. In addition, they made rabbits from small wooden discs, gluing on ears and facial features made from natural seeds, then decorating them with hemp-tow hair and corn-husk bows. The finished rabbits, along with the red eggs, were glued onto a larger wooden disc, creating a festive table centrepiece!

At the end of the programme, the large gathering of contestants, crafters, and guests enjoyed traditional Serbian hospitality.
