Summer Handhandcrafts Camp in Desk (12 August 2024 )
We held our one-week summer handhandcrafts camp between 12 and 16 August. Here is a selection of photos to give you a taste of the camp, showing how the days were filled with diverse programmes, joy, and happiness despite the intense heat.
In the handhandcrafts camp of the 'Bánát' Serbian Cultural Non-Profit Association, instructors introduced the children to various traditional folk handhandcrafts. They tried their hand at the potter's wheel, decorating their finished pieces with grain patterns, and creating plates and small jugs with grain impressions. They learned straw weaving, crafted corn-husk flowers, and also tried felting to make colourful jewellery and flowers. Equally impressive was when they used wool yarn and cord-weaving techniques to create jewellery and hair ornaments. They also experienced traditional papermaking, dipping and pulling handmade paper, which they then decorated themselves.
During the week, a brand new traditional folk bench (lóca) was also constructed in the woodwork workshop. The children also took part in drama games throughout the week, focusing on a theme related to the Festival of the New Bread, which they performed during the camp's closing ceremony.
The exhibition of their completed handcrafts was a huge success among parents, and following the closing performance, the children were able to take their creations home. Parents were also treated to a bowl of traditional goulash at the celebration.
