Banat value recovery

Ornate embroidered headdress from the Banat region

One of the most intriguing treasures of regional cultural heritage is the embroidered headdress of Banat Serbian women, the 'kapica', which was proudly worn both on celebrations and in daily life. When admiring this extraordinary headpiece, the wearer's life story emerges from behind the rich ornamentation: the patterns and materials accurately revealed a woman's marital status and her standing within the village community.

The fabric of the headdresses always adapted to the rhythm of seasons and occasions, so alongside durable linen and cotton, elegant silk appeared, as well as soft velvet for cold winter days. The most spectacular items were unequivocally the bridal costumes. The secret of this visual impact lies in the stunning Banat gold embroidery: artisans cut shapes from cardboard, fixed them to the cloth with starch paste, and then stitched down the metallic thread with a fine thread, pulling it towards the centre of the designs. This is how the 3D embossed surface was born, completed with shimmering sequins, tiny beads, and silk.

This wonderful design heritage continues to inspire modern textile artists and cultural preservationists today.
