Since times of old, Serbian towels (peškir) have served both ordinary life and bright feast days. These textiles were woven from cotton and linen yarns, and adorned with the masterful technique of needle-painted embroidery. Their ornamentation referring to flora and their human figures may show different forms from region to region. At weddings and other family feasts, they appeared as decorations and precious gifts.
Among the Serbian people, the towel was not only a useful tool but also a sign of prosperity, given to the maiden as a trousseau. In the house of the Lord, at holy ceremonies and during the raising of the iconostasis, an important duty was granted to these woven fabrics.
