Banat value recovery

Embroidered wall hanging with a well

Woven embroidered wall hangings were indispensable and popular ornaments of Banat kitchens, which, alongside practical wall protection, performed important aesthetic and communication functions. The Serbian-language inscriptions mostly conveyed moral teachings, family wisdom, or humorous messages, faithfully reflecting the value system of local communities. The praise of love, domestic peace, and housewifely virtues was a regularly recurring element. These white linens were embroidered by hand, most frequently with blue or red cotton thread, and the texts were entwined with floral decorations and everyday genre scenes, proclaiming the diligence and talent of the house's mistress.
