Banat value recovery

Serbian towel

Serbian towels bearing the name peškir are traditional textiles that have a centuries-old heritage both in daily use and at celebrations. The pieces made of cotton or linen were rendered unique with distinct needle-painted embroidery. Their patterns – from floral forms to human figures – vary by region. They found their place at weddings and other family events as decorations or valuable gifts.
In Serbian culture, these objects were considered status symbols, so brides received them as part of their dowry. Their important church role is demonstrated by the fact that iconostases were also adorned with these during religious ceremonies.
