Serbian towels (peškir) are centuries-old representations of festive and everyday material culture. Often woven from linen or cotton, they gained their final form through their characteristic needle-painted embroidery. The floral patterns and human depictions show regional richness. They fulfilled a special function in marriage rituals and family celebrations as decorative elements or gift objects.
In Serbian society, they were carriers of social prestige, thus becoming indispensable pieces of the dowry. Moreover, they are inseparable elements of the sacred space, well exemplified by the decoration of church iconostases.
