In the past, the walls of Banat homes, and especially kitchens, were protected from stains by embroidered wall hangings, which simultaneously made the space cosy and conveyed messages to those entering. The pieces provided with Serbian inscriptions carried the life wisdom, moral teachings, or the everyday humour of the house's people, often placing family love and a tidy home at the centre. The women embroidered these white linen pieces themselves by hand, using red or blue cotton thread. The letters were surrounded by flower wreaths and charming home scenes, so besides being the kitchen's ornament, the wall hanging was also a symbol of the housewife's skill.
